The Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance brings together civic leaders from across all sectors to increase the Toronto region’s economic prosperity and make our people and places thrive. We do this by launching high-impact collaborative initiatives on a range of social, economic, and environmental challenges and opportunities facing the Toronto region.
CivicAction currently has three areas of focus:
- Accelerating regional transportation
- Enhancing the region’s economic performance
- Fostering inclusion and resilience
CivicAction’s Regional Transportation Initiative and Champions Council
CivicAction has a vision of an efficient, accessible, and affordable regional transportation system that plays a vital role in driving the economic, social, and environmental prosperity of the GTHA. This vision is driven by the work we did leading up to and at CivicAction’s 2011 Greater Toronto Summit, attended by close to 1000 regional leaders.
Our post-Summit report, Breaking Boundaries, Time to Think and Act Like a Region, called for broadening public awareness of the need to implement the approved regional transportation plan and galvanizing support for a mix of sustainable sources to fund its implementation. It’s based on the conclusions of CivicAction’s 2010 report Time to Get Serious: Reliable Funding for GTHA Transit and Transportation prepared by Neal Irwin and Andrew Bevan.
CivicAction has recruited an impressive roster of rising and senior leaders from business, not for profit, labour, academic, and community organizations to champion the need for a better transportation network and the means to pay for it. The members of our Champions Council are motivated by the major obstacles they face in moving their people and goods across the GTHA.
During the multi-phase campaign, they are taking this conversation to their communities on why transportation matters to people, and what actions they want governments to take to invest in a better regional transportation system. The group’s reach is broad, collectively representing more than three million employees, students, customers, and members across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
The funding to launch CivicAction’s Regional Transportation Campaign has come from donations to CivicAction by a number of core supporters.
